Shoot Day: 29th November - Publicity Shots

After the 50s that day, since we needed publicity shots for that era, we shot it in between filming 50s and 70s.

Here are some publicity shots we took:

The 'Greaser' hairdo - Establishing the era
The Couple Shot - Jacob's cheeky smile addressing the audience

For 50s we needed the set up for era establishment, however for 90s we really only needed the boombox, that also meant less set up for us.
Similar to the 90s rappers camera angle and pose

These shots are fun, making the audience feel closer to the characters
Couple shots help promote the theme of the music video aswell as the narrative

For the era shots, Audrey, Brandon and I helped take them since Juliette was not able to.

When we took more band publicity shots, Juliette was able to hold the camera after all the acting and filming.

In this band publicity shot session, we wore different outfits and used a different background for some variety. We tried to keep the bands personas constant through their outfits

Brandon still wears a plaid shirt over a plain white top. Jacob still has his innocent 'boy next door' look with his button up shirt. Audrey has her playful look with her colourful top and i look 'cool' with a pattern top but not too colourful.

Here are some of the shots we took:

We chose a variety of poses as to the old publicity shots. We also took close ups of each band member:
Jacob - Innocent Image

Brandon - fun and cheeky
Me - cool
Audrey - composed
Aside from the 'cool' poses we did, we also took some fun poses:

I found these ones really cool because it looked like Audrey has been edited in while everyone else around her is moving around and blurred.

This shows the personalities of the band - Jacob as gullible and innocent and Brandon as the cheeky playful guy

Shoot Day: 29th November

This shoot was for reshoots or 50s, 80s, band and modern then band publicity shots after.

Since Jacob's lip syncing had improved significantly through the shoots it was fairly easy to shoot.

Brandon had set up for the 50s set the day before but when we had arrived at the studio, the cars had already fallen so we had to fix that while the actors got ready however it was fine, though the cars for slightly crumpled it wasn't that visible on camera.

Filming 50s
Brandon directing them what to improve on
As Juliette got ready after the 50s, we did a shot from 70s which was the close up of Jacob, this only required Jacob wearing his top and the 70s lighting which was quickly and easily done.

We then moved onto 80s:

Us standing to light the set
The shot that we added in was a MU of Jacob walking across the bench, we also thought that it would be a good idea for Jacob to look at the camera to address the audience.

After filming our essentials shots that we needed since we didn't have any other option for the shots, we moved onto filming band.

Luckily this time we were able to locate Jacob's costume, which was a real relief. Meaning we could shoot the band performance and Jacob's CUs.

When we had got all the footage for band, we filmed the shots that we needed from modern. It was easy to set up for this as the zebra crossing was not visible so we did not fuss to lay it out, all we needed was the blue lighting.

We chose to do modern last as that outfit that Jacob was wearing would be what he would wear in the publicity shots we did after modern.

The filming that day went smoothly since it was all reshoots, everyone knew exactly what to do and what they had to improve on from the last shoots.

Shoot Day: 21th November

We decided this shoot we would solely be shooting the band performance for improvement and because in the old footage, the microphone on Jacob was too high, covering his mouth.

Before:mic too high,                         After: shot from this shoot
Also as you can tell from the image above Jacob is wearing a different jumper, this was due to the reason that it was not where we had left it before so we couldn't find it and had to make do with Juliette's black jumper.

We shot various framings for the performances. For example, CU's of the band members as well as close ups of the instruments like the guitar and bass.

Here are some photos from the shoot:

Having different shot angles to make it more interesting
Mid shots of the band members for the audience to feel closer
From last band shoot, we remembered that when Brandon plays the drums, the drum kit tends to move away from him, so our solution to that problem was to have someone sitting in front of the drum kit for his close ups.

Here's me sitting in front of the drum kit
Overall the shoot went well but then we realised when looking over the footage was that the we were not able to use any of Jacob's shots and the bad band performance we filmed today because we would not be able to use the extreme close up of Jacob which shows a bit of his burgandy jumper. It was unfortunate but we were still able to use it as template to see if it all looked well together. However this was kind of lucky because I personally preferred the burgandy jumper and I'm sure the others preferred it too; in the end we decided to reshoot the wide band performance shot and Jacob's shots another day.

Shoot Day: 18th November

This was the shoot that we scheduled a reshoot of the 90s scenes as well as filming the whole dance sequences for both the dances in all the eras, then we would film modern.

To make our lives easier, we decided to start with 90s since the actors knew exactly what they were doing so we would get it over and done with.

Setting up 90s scene
This was much easier to do since we had shot this scene many 3 times before so we were able to quickly move onto the next scene which was the dance sequences.

Here are some photos from the 90s scene:

For the dance sequence, to ensure the continuity of the dance sequence between the different eras, we had to remember to keep constant the following aspects:

  • Camera Position
After we had positioned the camera where we wanted it for the dance sequence we were not allowed to touch or move it after until we finished filming the dance sequence. Since the camera was not moved we did not have to refocus it as the depth of the actors were the same throughout all the shots.
  • Actor Positions
Me marking the floor
The same reason to why we didn't move the camera, we needed the actors to be in similar positions throughout each eras. So we made small unnoticeable pencil marks where the actors would start off in each shot.

First we started with the 90s due to it being set up, however we had to remove the coffee table allowing more space to dance in.

Next was 80s due to the easy set up:

In the 80s scene we kept the book that the female lead was holding in, establishing the set and era.

Moving onto 70s dance scene:

After our previous shoot on 70s, our dance floor had been ruined so we had to do some quick repairs so it looks fairly decent on screen. Also the marks that we had on the floor had to be transferred onto the disco floor so the actors would know where to start.

Our last era was 50s for both dance:

Troublesome setting up of the set
Unfortunately our cars were not as nice as they were when we first used them, which was quick upsetting but we had to deal with it.

We made sure to do both the dances for each era; although the actors had practiced the dance before, we shot many takes but in the end we were able to get excellent ones so we didn't have to reshoot everything.

After all those eras we shot the mordern scene, filming the second dance first since modern is not introduced before the first dance.

The great thing about this shoot was that as it went by, the filming became quicker for each shot because the actors started to get a hang of the dance sequence therefore making less mistakes.

Then we moved onto shooting the modern 'meeting' of the couples.

Brandon and Juliette going through choreography for Jacob
In the end we were quite satisfied with the footage we got, here are some edits we did:

This edit showed us that the dance worked really well and one thing I was really happy about was that the colours of each eras complimented each other so well. We were all really satisfied with the outcome especially how the actors were in the correct positions throughout the dance.

When we put together the footage we obtained for the modern era, we decided that some frames were not shot well for example the close up of Juliette, and so we schedules a reshoot.

Shoot Day: 15th November - Publicity Shots

To make use of all the time we had in the studio, we decided to take publicity shots after the 80s and 70s eras while they were in costume.

Previewing the images taken
As these were the publicity shots for the music video, we wanted to promote the 'innocent couple love' image.

Here are some of the publicity shots:

80s

This image convey the couple love and upbeat nature of the music video
We also went for the 'prom photo' pose, as our scene is referencing 'The Breakfast Club' which is in a school.

We also shot individual shots of the actors:

This pose conveys Jacob's character as an innocent and cheeky boy

70s

Doing the infamous 'Saturday Night Fever' dance pose - making him look really androgynous
Couple Shots
After the 70s shots, we moved onto publicity shots for the modern era.
